VETERAN PROGRAMS & RESOURCES
The Invisible Injury
Blasts are a leading cause of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) for military personnel and veterans. Blast TBIs occur from a pressure wave generated by an explosion resulting in cognitive skills that are impaired no matter the severity of the injury. Many problems can arise from a blast TBI that include physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Poor outcomes become more likely when stays in different settings are shortened. The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) advocates towards working to improve TBI care for returning service-members and veterans through inclusion of TBI provisions. Some of the new oversight efforts being made include development of individualized recovery programs. One program for veterans includes the Peer Visitor Program for veterans and their loved ones. Other resources for veterans and their families/caregivers can also be found if you scroll to the bottom of the page as well as more information on blast TBIs. Learning about the resources available and the advocacy taking place can help the veterans closest to you!
